Summit Aviation Expands Operations to Kentucky

Summit Aviation is establishing a new division of the company in Somerset, Kentucky to be called Summit Aviation – Kentucky Operations (Summit KY) at the Somerset-Pulaski County Airport.  The focus of the Summit Kentucky Operation will be to establish an assembly and light manufacturing facility to produce aircraft subassemblies for certain aircraft produced by The Schweizer Aircraft Corporation (SAC), a subsidiary of Sikorsky Aircraft.

Summit KY will provide the labor resources to assemble detailed aircraft parts received from SAC into larger subassemblies that typically require a large number of man hours to complete.  Summit KY will return the larger subassemblies to SAC for final assembly into the finished products including surveillance aircraft, helicopters, unmanned vehicles, and other products.

Summit KY and SAC are contemplating other services to be provided in KY to supplement both SAC and Sikorsky Aircraft manufacturing needs.  SAC will be the primary customer although Summit will have the ability to expand the operation to other customers as the business grows.

The three Schweizer brothers built their first glider in 1930 and incorporated the Company that bears their name in 1939. Prior to becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Sikorsky in September 2004, Schweizer Aircraft was the oldest remaining privately-owned aircraft company in the United States. Schweizer Aircraft has produced 2,160 sailplanes, 2,650 agricultural airplanes, more than 60 special purpose fixed-wing aircraft and unmanned vehicles, and more than 850 helicopters.

Schweizer manufactures three proprietary helicopters, two types of covert reconnaissance aircraft and has been an airframe subcontractor to the aerospace industry for over 60 years. Schweizer has performed on many hundreds of subcontract programs and worked with nearly every major U.S. aerospace company.

One of Schweizer Aircraft's newest business sectors is unmanned helicopters. Schweizer manufactures the Fire Scout VTUAV air vehicle under subcontract to Northrop Grumman. This unmanned vehicle will operate autonomously from land and sea to meet U.S. Navy and Marine requirements for reconnaissance and precision targeting.

Sikorsky Aircraft has also identified several potential components that would be excellent candidates for outsourcing to Summit KY.  The initial product is targeted to be the gearbox on the HU-60 Blackhawk helicopters.
